Jacquelyn Payne

Jacque Payne began skating at the age of 4.  A community center was built in her hometown of Eden Prairie, MN and her parents signed her up for swimming and ice skating lessons.  When her mom got pneumonia after going from warm temperatures to cold temperatures, she gave Jacque the option to choose swimming or skating.  Jacque chose swimming.

Her mom on the other hand had other plans.  She had always enjoyed watching skating, and as a young girl herself she used to skate on the frozen river in her backyard during those cold Iowa winter months.  So Jacque’s mom told her that she would continue with her skating lessons instead.

Over the course of the next 12 years Jacque tested, competed, and learned ice dancing. In 1987 she became the Upper Great Lakes Juvenile Ladies Champion and continued to train as a singles skater.  By the summer of 1992 she had passed her 5th figure test, Junior Freestyle, Pre-Bronze ice dances, and competed at regional competitions as a Senior lady. Sadly, she left the sport in 1992 finding finances were tight.

In 1997, after attending college at the University of Kansas, she returned back to Minnesota and realized she missed the ice.  She wanted to have something to do with skating again, whether it be competing, judging or even coaching.  Two weeks later she saw an ad in the local paper in search of skating instructors for Learn To Skate classes and she has been coaching ever since.

Initially she focused on the elements to build singles skaters.  Moves in the Field, Jumps, Spins, etc.  After relocating to Washington State in the fall of 2001, she was open to learning more about different disciplines within the skating world.  She began coaching synchronized skating and theatre on ice, as well as maintaining an active base of singles skaters.

In 2002 she also began skating on a Synchronized Skating team, Seattle Ice.  In 2003, 2004, and 2005 the team won the Pacific Coast Championships.  In 2004 and 2005 they advanced to Nationals where they placed 6th and 7th respectively.  It was from here that Jacque’s newfound passion for synchronized skating began to flourish. In 2006, Seattle Ice placed 3rd at Sectionals.

In 2005 she began building Emerald Mystique, her own Synchro program in Kirkland, WA.  In 2007, she took her adult team to Pacific Coast Championships; their first competition.  She is excited to begin extending her Synchro program in the spring of 2007 to Castle Ice in Renton, WA.

Her vision is to continue building the program between the two rinks, and adding youth teams to her already established adult Synchro program.  With hard work and dedication from the skaters, she has no doubt she will be coaching them to Sectional, National, and even International competitions!

Looks like moms know best!

"The Lady In Red"

During the last ice show in which Jacque was an amateur, she skated to "Lady in Red" by Chris DeBurgh. The nickname came from a life-long skating friend and stayed with her ever since. Now she has red skates, a red scarf and coaching jacket. If you want to seek her out at the rink, look for the "Lady in Red!"

Jacque is also the proud wife of Leonard Payne, a Ticket Broker for sporting games, concerts and shows. She's also the proud step-mom of two wonderful children!
